Summary:
A random sample of 1,505 Palestinians, over the age of 18 years, were interviewed throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip on 19/20/21September 1993. The interviews were conducted on a face-to-face basis with people who visited general service offices in the main towns to fill out application forms for their identity cards, travel documents, birth registrations, etc. In the West Bank, 920 questionnaires were received from the following major areas: Jenin, Tulkarem, Qalqilia, Nablus, Ramallah, Hebron, East Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and Jericho. In the Gaza Strip, 585 questionnaire were received from Gaza, Khan Younis and Rafah areas. The margin of error is plus or minus 3% with a confidence level of 95%. ________________________________________ Sample Distribution • 61.1% of the respondents were from the West Bank • 38.9% from the Gaza Strip • 21.8% said they live in villages • 26.6% in refugee camps • 51.6% in towns/cities • 77.5% were male • 22.5% were female • 68.3% were married • 30.4% single • 0.6% widowed • 0.7% divorced • The average of age of the respondents was 32 years. ________________________________________ Occupation respondents • Students 10.9% • Waged laborers 14.7% • Housewives 4.9% • Employees 24.7% • Businessmen/private business 15.1% • Farmers 1.1% • Craftsmen 13.1% • Doctors/lawyers/pharmacists/engineers 8.8% • Unemployed 5.8% • Retired 0.9%
