Statement issued by the National and Islamic Forces
The Call of the Nakba Anniversary and the Right of Return
May 5, 2001

Following is the statement issued by the National and Islamic Forces on May 5, 2001; signatories are: Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fateh); Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP); Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas); Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP); Palestinian People’s Party (PPP); Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA); Palestinian Popular Struggle Front; Palestinian Liberation Front; Islamic Jihad Movement; Arab Liberation Front; Palestinian Arab Front; Popular Front—General Command; Islamic National Salvation Party; and Popular Liberation War Pioneers (Sa’iqa):

Our great Palestinian masses
Our Arab and Islamic Masses
Our heroes of the Intifada

The blessed Intifada, the Intifada of Al-Aqsa, Al-Quds, Independence and Return, enters its eighth month, stressing on its continuation since it is the popular option that achieves victory. The Israeli aggression in its various political, diplomatic, military, security and economic forms continues against our people; this aggression comes in harmony with the Israeli scheme that aims to extract its own direct interest in breaking the isolation imposed on Sharon-Peres government. In his moves, Peres leans on the Arab positions and initiatives that allow him to market his policy, exploiting the role of the mediator which the Arab countries entrusted to him in the initiative. The meeting between Qatar Foreign Minister and Peres in Washington and the call by the Qatari Minister in the name of the Islamic Conference for a Palestinian-Israeli Summit came to confirm this trend to break this isolation instead of tightening it. All this happens while Sharon tries to consolidate his occupation on the West Bank and Gaza Strip through the meeting of cabinet in Ofra Settlement and his visits to Gosh Qateef Settlement to assure to settlers there that they are staying in the settlement forever and that the Jordan Valley is the eternal borders of the state of the Zionist entity. Moreover, there are the statements of the Zionist Infrastructure Minister Liberman who calls for re-occupying the West Bank and Gaza Strip and for destroying the infrastructure and suprastructure of the PNA and for erecting four self-rule regions under Israeli control. There is also the decision taken by the Israeli military leadership to re-occupy indirectly 500 meters deep in PNA regions close to settlements and ban owners of those lands to enter them in order to form a security zone to the existing settlements.

In the light of this aggression, Sharon believes that the Arab moves and initiatives are a sign of weakness that serves the continuation of his intransigence and belligerence and this is clear from his daily moves. Sharon expressed relief and satisfaction regarding the Arab initiatives because it gives him the chance to continue the aggressions against the Palestinian people without any intervention from any party. He admitted: "there are matters that we do and we keep denying them and other matters that we do not deny but everybody knows that the army is responsible for them and there are methods that remain always secret." This statement by Sharon, which Israelis considered as a slip of the tongue, reveals the policy that produces bombed operations that take place in Palestinian residential areas while they deny them in order to create a gap between the Intifada and the masses that stress on the continuation of the Intifada.

The National and Islamic Forces affirm the need to see the Arab and Islamic countries and masses exercise all means to isolate Sharon-Peres government. The Arab and Islamic countries and masses must show their actual support through practical measures and support the Intifada and resistance as stipulated in the decisions of the Arab and Islamic summit.

The Forces stress on the need to condemn the US policy expressed in the statement of President Bush who supports the continuation of the Zionist Sharonian aggression and covers up his acts through its continuous pressure on some Arab regimes and threats against their interests.

On the occasion of the Nakba and the loss of Palestine, the National and Islamic Forces stress on the participation of the masses inside and outside the homeland so that the call of the sacred right of return and the continuation of the Intifada and adherence to the constants will be the popular response on this occasion. The Forces call for unifying efforts to make this anniversary an occasion to reinforce the Palestinian comprehensive national unity with all potentials of our Palestinian society, the PNA and the PLO. The potentials and activities of the National and Islamic Forces must unite with the efforts and activities of the Higher National Commission to Commemorate the anniversary of the Nakba on May 15, in all aspects and at all levels.

The National and Islamic Forces call on the Arab masses and their institutions and their national and Islamic forces and popular institutions to participate in commemorating this anniversary that comes to stress the support to the Intifada and resistance and consolidate the sacred right of return to the Palestinian people to their homes and properties from which they were evicted.

The National and Islamic Forces call on our masses to participate in the following activities:

1- Wednesday, May 9, 2001: A day of massive marches to join the Palestinian trade unionists that announced this day for their activities.
2- Friday, May 11, 2001: A day of marches to commemorate the anniversary of the Nakba and reject the continuous Zionist aggression and confront the settlements and aggression that targeted the Aqsa Mosque while our masses in Jerusalem confronted this assault with heroism; we call for heading for prayers at the Aqsa Mosque.

The escalation of the Zionist aggression, according to Sharon's statements, will not be limited to quantitative escalation. The signs of qualitative escalation started to appear which require more caution, alertness, and increased efforts to arrange the Palestinian internal home in all its components, including the closure of the political file and release all detainees. The US Pentagon, which is ruled by the Likudians, is giving the green light to the attempts of breaking the Palestinian will. This requires more readiness to confront these attempts. This also requires keeping all powers to be used at the right time and place. It is not acceptable to see at this phase when there are attempts to break into our territories that some return to the wrong practices that harm the unity and affect the role of the masses in the Intifada, especially opening fire and wasting it during marches and during popular confrontations at the checkpoints.

The National and Islamic Forces call on the masses to abide by the practical position that can strengthen our front and make it more capable to remain steadfast and achieve victory god's willing.

Long live the blessed Intifada
Glory and eternity for our martyrs
Fast recovery to the injured and freedom for our heroic prisoners
It is an Intifada until victory
