Summary of Public
Opinion Polls on Government Performance
Since the formation of the
current government on March 29th 2006, JMCC has conducted two
public opinion polls on government performance. The first opinion poll was
conducted in June 2006 and the second was conducted late September 2006. The
two polls covered a sample of 1,200 respondents, including 760 in the West Bank and 440 in the Gaza Strip. The results of
these polls indicate a decrease over time in public opinion of government
performance.
- The percentage of those who considered the
performance of the Cabinet to be “good” dropped from 27.5% in June to
21.8% in September. The percentage of those who saw that the Prime
Minister's performance as “good” dropped from 43.9% to 35.8% over the
same period.
- The opinion of the government performance in
different sectors also dropped significantly. For example, those who
indicated that the Ministry of Education’s performance was “good” fell
from 50.2% to 33.0%; while those who thought that the Ministry of
Health’s performance was “good” fell from 35.0% to 24.4%.
- Satisfaction with the performance of the
security services dropped from 23.1% to 16.8%.
- The Presidency appears to be less of a focus of
discontent with respondents' confidence in President Mahmoud Abbas'
dropping by only 1.5%.
- A further indicator of public discontent with
the performance of the government is the fact that 63.6% of the
respondents supported the strike of the public sector employees in the
September poll compared with only 15.1% in the June poll.
