PLC Speaker takes Arafat's place
Deputy Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) Hassan
Khreisha announced on Thursday that Rawhi Fatouh, Speaker of the PLC would be the temporary
President of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) for 60 days until elections are held.
Khreisha told reporters that the first message "that we want to send to the international community that
the Palestinian people and amid the current difficult situation, still standing around its legitimate
leadership."
"According to the Palestinian basic law, the Speaker of the plc is nominated as the president of the
Palestinian National Authority for sixty days and within this period, it would be prepared for general
elections," said Khreisha.
He said that the Palestinian officials "conceive how difficult holding general and presidential elections
under such circumstances, adding 'But we want the international community to pressure Israel to withdraw
from the Palestinian territories."
"We insist to practice real democracy and we call upon the international community to help us practicing
our democracy and to choose our leadership and let the Palestinian people surround their leadership,"
said Khreisha.
