Palestinian President Abbas affirmed yesterday evening that his meeting with Israeli PM Olmert has not been confirmed 100% but there are expectations on holding this meeting. Abbas told Palestine TV: If the meeting is held today, there are many issues that we will pose for discussion pertaining to the daily life issues of the citizen, such as the crossings, the prisoners, the security forces, the economy and the case of 54,000 citizens who have no identity cards. The office of Olmert confirmed that the meeting will be held today in Jerusalem. When asked about the international peace conference called for by President Bush, Abbas said he posed three questions and so far he received no answers for them: When will the conference be held? Who will attend the conference? And what is the content of the conference? President Abbas explained that he made a phone call with US Secretary of State Rice to get answers to these questions and affirmed that she didn’t give any answers to any of the three questions. He stressed on the need for the participation of all concerned parties, such as Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt in order to talk about activating the Arab Peace Initiative. He continued: Some people talk about the need to declare principles through the international conference; we did present these principles and we will not return to this; this is a waste of time, but if there is a practical working framework to solve the issues of the final status, we will welcome the conference and we will attend it. On the situation in Gaza Strip, he said: We will not accept attacking the Palestinian people because of Hamas and the oppression it is exercising in Gaza; Hamas oppressed the worshipers and the journalists and those who exercise such acts are illegal and illegitimate. He reiterated his position that firing rockets is foul act, especially the rocket firing towards Erez Checkpoint which is used by the citizens with special needs, such as the students, patients and those who carry residency permits abroad.
