RAMALLAH, October 6 (JMCC) - The United States on Friday called not helpful possible attempts by Palestinians to seek a statehood declaration from the United Nations, crushing hopes that the United States might back such a move.

Palestinians have been seeking another way to move forward since direct talks between Israel and Palestinians floundered over Israel's ongoing settlement construction in the occupied West Bank. One idea floated by politicians was to seek a United Nations resolution that would declare a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.

We remain convinced that ultimately the only way that we're going to get a comprehensive peace is through direct negotiations, and anything that might affect those direct negotiations we feel is not helpful and not constructive, US State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.
