RAMALLAH, Jan. 23 (JMCC) - Tens of protesters were arrested in Sheikh Jarrah Friday, protesting against the growing Jewish settlement in the East Jerusalem neighborhood.
The demonstration resulted in clashes between left-wing protesters and the settlers living there. Israeli left leader Yossi Sarid, Hadash chair Muhammed Barakeh, and former parliamentarian Avraham Burg all participated in the demonstration.
Arab Knesset member Mohammed Barakeh told the crowd: The issue isn't about a house here and a neighbourhood there, but about the intention to empty Jerusalem of its Arab citizens. This is a crime against the Arab population and a crime against the peace process.
Protests in Sheikh Jarrah have become a weekly event, as residents and their supporters show their rejection of attempts by settler groups to take over Palestinian homes through the use of British Mandate ownership documents.
