GAZA, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Israeli troops on Tuesday shot dead a Palestinian militant in the
Gaza Strip who had approached the border fence, officials said, the latest in a series of violent incidents at the tense frontier.
The Israeli military said in a statement troops with air support opened fire on a group of militants planting explosives along the border fence, hitting one of them.
Palestinian medical officials said the militant, a member of the Popular Resistance Committees, was killed as he approached the Israeli border. At least one other person was wounded, they said.
Israel and Gaza's Islamist rulers
Hamas have said they want to avoid an escalation in violence. However, rockets and mortar shells fired from Gaza have rained down almost daily on southern Israel this month and Israeli forces have frequently attacked militant targets in the coastal territory.
