RAMALLAH, Dec 29 (JMCC) - Fed up with failed peace talks, the
Palestinian Authority has drafted a resolution for the UN Security Council seeking condemnation of Israeli
settlement expansion.
Currently lead by the US, Russia, China, the UK and France, the UNSC will add on January 1 Colombia, South Africa, Germany, India and Portugal to Bosnia, Lebanon, Gabon, Nigeria, and Brazil. The Latin American country is
expected to host Friday PA President Mahmoud Abbas while he lays the foundation for a new Palestinian embassy.
The Associated Press obtained a copy of the draft on Wednesday. It calls settlements a major obstacle to the achievement of peace. It does not call for sanctions against Israel, and urges both sides to continue negotiations toward a final peace agreement.
With U.S.-backed peace efforts deadlocked for more than three months, the Palestinians are pressing forward with the resolution as part of a broader effort to step up international pressure on Israel.
