RAMALLAH, January 17 (JMCC) - Washington can be expected this week to veto a draft UN Security Council resolution opposing Israeli
settlements, the Financial Times
reports.
Palestinians have forged ahead with plans to present a draft resolution to the UN body on Wednesday.
The US administration has signalled that it will this week veto a UN resolution on the Middle East even though it reflects the White House’s position on Israeli settlement building in occupied Palestinian territory.
Washington has urged the Palestinians to drop plans to seek a vote on a draft resolution in the 15-member Security Council on Wednesday on the grounds that such a move would disrupt its efforts to revive the peace process.
Palestinians have pursued the UN vote as a test case for a possible resolution establishing a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders. A US veto would signal to Palestinians that attempts to bypass stalled bilateral negotiations will not be permitted in the United Nations.
