RAMALLAH, January 29 (JMCC) - The Egyptian military has taken up positions in the resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, reports al-Jazeera International.
Tanks appeared to be positioned to protect tourists in the popular vacation spot, said correspondents for the satellite channel.
The military movement in the Sinai would have required coordination with
Israel, with which a 1979 peace treaty prevents the positioning of military troops in the southernmost region that borders the Jewish state.
Israeli officials refused to comment on the new development, al-Jazeera said.
