RAMALLAH, February 23 (JMCC) - A small group of demonstrators in support of Syria's regime scuffled Wednesday with Palestinian protesters in support of the Syrian opposition in Ramallah's downtown.
A video shot and edited by photographer Fadi Arouri (see here) shows a handful of people shouting slogans avowing loyalty to Assad and Palestine. One young woman carries a poster emblazoned with Assad's face.
Some Palestinians feel that the fall of Assad, whose family has ruled Syria for four decades, would hurt the future of their cause. Syria has supported Hezbollah, the Lebanese resistance movement, which fought a war with Israel in 2006 and allowed Palestinian factions that support armed struggle to base themselves in Damascus.
Other Palestinians shown in the video challenge the protesters, expressing solidarity with Syrian opposition groups challenging Assad's grip on power.
Men who appear to be security officers dressed in plain clothes intervene to break up the scuffle.
