RAMALLAH Feb 25 (JMCC) - Ten Palestinians were injured in clashes that broke out Wednesday night in
Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem.
International supporters of the Palestinian families in the contested area were holding an event when Israeli settlers interrupted, setting off clashes between the settlers, Palestinians and the police.
Several arrests were made in the incident, which occurred at approximately 10 pm Wednesday evening. Among the injured was a nine-year-old Palestinian boy who was hospitalized after inhaling tear gas.
Israeli settlers have gradually moved into the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, challenging the ownership of Palestinian homes. Residents, international supporters and Israeli left protesters hold demonstrations every Friday to protest the moves, and occasional altercations break out in the tense neighborhood.
The eastern half of Jerusalem is the focus of stepped-up Jewish settlement efforts as Israel seeks to solidify its demographic majority in the holy city.
