RAMALLAH, March 17 (JMCC) - Sporadic clashes have broken out in the occupied
West Bank, one day after heavy confrontations in
Jerusalem.
An estimated 40 Palestinians were injured by Wednesday afternoon, said Jamal Jumaa, head of the popular committee to stop the
wall.
Stone-throwing demonstrations broke out in
Bethlehem,
Ramallah,
Nablus and
Hebron near Israeli checkpoints that are often flashpoints.
This is the beginning of a massive public outcry against the measures of the occupation, whether they are in the city of Jerusalem or in any other region in the occupied Palestinian territories, said Jumaa.
Jumaa said that the public protests were aimed at lifting the siege of and ongoing attacks on the city of Jerusalem.
The
Israeli government inaugurated this week a major synagogue near the Muslim holy site of the al-Aqsa mosque. The synagogue's size and importance in Jewish history has raised Palestinian fears that Israel seeks to control Jerusalem's sensitive holy sites.
Conditions in Jerusalem continued to be tense Wednesday, and Israeli police said they were extending emergency measures until Sunday. Violent clashes Tuesday led to the injury of more than 100 Palestinians and 14 Israeli police and security officers.
