RAMALLAH, Mar. 30 (JMCC) - A review has been called by members of the British Parliament to assess the continuation of arms sales to
Israel, according to
The Guardian.
The review comes in response to allegations that British supplied arms were 'almost certainly used' by Israel in
Operation Cast Lead in Gaza fourteen months ago.
The Israeli military operation, which killed around 1,400 Palestinians, many of them civilians, has been accused of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity by the UN sanctioned
Goldstone report.
Governments in Europe as well as the United States have strict codes on arms sales to areas of conflict. Palestinians have long accused world governments of acting contrary to their own policies regarding this issue.
The subject was specifically raised in 2002 during the
second Intifada, when Israel was accused by Palestinians of conducting a massacre in the West Bank city of
Jenin, with the use of US supplied Apache helicopters.
The Commons committee on strategic export controls called the use of British weapons in Gaza 'regrettable'.
This is in direct contravention to the UK government's policy that UK arms exports to Israel should not be used in the
occupied territories.
