Palestinians hired by the government run by President Mahmoud Abbas used Google Earth to identify Hamas targets, claimed the Islamist group Monday.

The Hamas television station al-Aqsa broadcast the purported confessions of several Palestinian men who said they had sent information to Palestinian Authority officials in Ramallah, who then communicated the coordinates to Israel for use in its bombing raids in last month's war.

With the help of the Google Earth program, those groups prepared maps to localise mosques, institutions, tunnels or workshops, said Abu Abdallah, a senior intelligence officer in the Hamas government which rules the Gaza Strip, according to AFP.

The targets were then hit by the Israeli air force, he said in a news conference.

Palestinian presidential aide Yasser Abed Rabbo told reporters in Ramallah that the charges were intended to stall factional negotiations set to take place in Egypt this week.

Israel's 22-day war in Gaza killed 1,300 Palestinians, many of them civilians. Eleven Israelis were killed, nine of them soldiers.
