RAMALLAH, April 24 (JMCC) - An estimated 30 Palestinians and their Israeli and foreign supporters were injured in clashes in the Jerusalem neighborhood of
Silwan Sunday morning.
Palestinian youth clashed with Israeli police prior to a demonstration by right-wing Israeli settlers. The clashes continued throughout the afternoon, and police responded using rubber-coated bullets.
According to some reports, the ammunition used by police caused irregular burns and cuts in various regions in the body. Paramedics said they saw similar injuries during protests against police restrictions on the al-Aqsa mosque last month.
Israeli police made a number of arrests, including that of a Jerusalem
Fateh leader.
Hatem Abdel Qader was released on bail after being charged with incitement and harming public security. He is scheduled to appear again in court on Tuesday.
Tens of right-wing Israelis marched through the neighborhood of Silwan. Their demonstration was met with a counter protest. Residents shouted With our blood with sacrifice ourselves for you Silwan and beat pots and pans together to drown out the right-wing protesters.
Silwan has been the site of tensions between Palestinian residents and Israeli settlers, which have gradually moved into the area.
Some 200 Palestinian homes in Silwan are threatened with demolition by Israeli authorities and regular Palestinian demonstrations are held in protest.
