RAMALLAH, May 7 (JMCC) - In a declaration of solidarity with other Palestinians, Israel's Arab citizens launched a boycott campaign of Israeli settlement-made products on Thursday in the city of
Nazareth.
“We are launching a campaign across the entire Arab sector to boycott all goods manufactured in the
West Bank settlements,” said Mansour Dahamshy, chairman of the Kafr Kana public committee. “We mean to show solidarity with the Palestinian people and wage battle against the settlements and the occupation.”
A statement was also released by the organizers of the campaign calling for a united and dedicated front as part of a global campaign that is taking root. It stated that “around the world, several groups and organizations are boycotting settlement products, made in the occupied territories”, and that such campaigns in Europe and other parts of the world managed to achieve a significant success.
Retailers will be urged to provide a list of settlement made products for their customers' discretion. Reports have shown that Israeli-Arabs contribute upwards of NIS 400 million annually to the settlement economy through purchasing goods produced in West Bank settlements.
“The
list includes everything from fruits and vegetables to computers. We
will place the list in shops and place stickers requesting that people
abstain from purchasing settlement-made goods. Arab shopkeepers will be
ashamed to sell the goods anymore after that,” Dahamshy said.
Israelis from across the political spectrum have voiced concern over the boycott of settlement goods, most vocally from the right-wing. According to the Jerusalem Post, members of the National Union party have demanded that Israel take action against the Palestinian Authority.
NU MK Uri Arel was quoted in the Jerusalem Post saying, “We will encourage Israeli work and support of Jewish-Israeli products at the expense of products created by the Palestinian Authority. Palestinians and Israeli Arabs will soon discover that their severe actions will have a boomerang effect.”
