Ghassan Khatib is a lecturer at Birzeit University. Previously, he was the university's vice president for Development and Communications and served as director of the Palestinian Authority Government Media Center (2009-2012), Minister of Labor in 2002 and Minister of Planning (2005-2006). Khatib was also Vice-President for Community Outreach at Birzeit University (2006-2009), and founded and directed the Jerusalem Media and Communication Center, which specializes in research, opinion polling and media activities.

He was a member of the Palestinian delegation for the Madrid Middle East Peace Conference in 1991 and the subsequent bilateral negotiations in Washington from 1991-93. Khatib also co-founded and co-directed for 11 years the bitterlemons publications, a series of Palestinian-Israeli internet-based political publications. Khatib holds a PhD in Middle East politics from the University of Durham, and is author of Palestinian Politics and the Middle East Peace Process: Consensus and Competition in the Palestinian Negotiation Team. He was a member of the political bureau of the Palestinian People’s Party.
Khatib was born in 1954 in Nablus. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics and business administration from Birzeit University, a master's in development studies from Manchester University, England, and a PhD in Middle Eastern politics from the Durham University, England. He served as a lecturer for Birzeit University’s cultural studies Program between 1982 and 2002.
He is a long-time advocate of Palestinian-Israeli dialogue and was co-founder and co-editor of bitterlemons.org, a Palestinian-Israeli online magazine that informed about the conflict and the region for 11 years. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Israel-Palestine Journal, a political journal offering Palestinian and Israeli perspectives.
He has been a member of the board of trustees of the Friends Schools in Palestine. He served as president of the board of directors of the Arab Development Center, an agricultural development organization, and as a member of the board of trustees of the Democracy and Worker’s Rights Center.
He was a member of the Madrid Peace delegation in 1991 and was involved in the Washington negotiations between 1991 and 1993. He was a political prisoner in Israel between 1974 and 1978 and has been detained several times since.
