In 1991, Saeb Erekat was the vice-chair of the Madrid Peace Delegation and in 1992, the vice-chair at the Washington negotiations. In 1994, he was appointed the chairman of the Palestinian delegation for negotiations on elections and since then he has been a senior member of the Palestinian negotiation team. His role involved participating in all negotiations with Israel, including peace talks held in Camp David (2000) and negotiations in Taba (2001). He is the head of the Steering and Monitoring Committee of the Negotiations Affairs Department.

Since 1994 Erekat served as the minister of local government. In 1996 he was elected to the Palestinian Legislation Council on the Fateh slate, representing Jericho.
His professional career includes serving on the editorial board of al-Quds newspaper and serving as the secretary general of the Arab Studies Society. He is also professor of political science at al-Najah University in Nablus.
