Ahmed Saadat was elected General Secretary of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) in October 2001, when he succeeded the late Abu Ali Mustafa assassinated by Israeli troops in his Ramallah office. He is also a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council since January 2006.

Saadat has been held in the Palestinian Authority prison in Jericho for over four years. In 2002, Palestinian High Court of Justice in Gaza Strip ruled that Saadat’s detention was unconstitutional and ordered his release. Amnesty International also called on his immediate release and ensuring his safety, but PA refused to comply.

On March 14, 2006 Israeli military stormed into the prison and took Saadat together with five more inmates into Israeli prisons.

On December 25, 2008 Israeli military court sentenced Ahmed Saadat to 30 years in prison for heading an ‘illegal terrorist organization’.

On March 18, 2009 Saadat was moved into isolation to Ashkelon prison and five month later he was moved to the isolation unit at Ramon prison in the Naqab desert.

Ahmed Saadat is a supporter of one-state solution. He said that the Middle East conflict could only be resolved through the creation of a state shared by Palestinians and Jews.
