Al-Alami was born in Jerusalem in 1943. She received her primary and secondary education at the Schmidt School, Jerusalem. She holds a bachelor's degree in English from Beirut University, and a Masters in English literature and linguistics from Edinburgh University, Scotland. She started work as an English teacher at UNRWA Women’s Training College in Ramallah in 1974, and then became manager of the college. In 1994, al-Alami was appointed head of education for all UNRWA schools and colleges. She retired from this position in 2004. She was director general of the Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens Rights, and is a board member of several organizations.
