She lived in exile for 30 years with her husband, Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad), the co-founder of the Fateh party and one of the instrumental leaders of the first Intifada. He was assassinated in 1988 in his home in Tunisia. Al-Wazir returned to the Gaza Strip in 1995 and was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council in 1996.
