Marwan Barghouthi is a prominent Palestinian political figure and a member of Fateh. He is regarded as a leader of the first and second Intifada. Barghouthi strongly supported the peace process and Oslo Accords. Barghouthi is said to have founded Tanzim. He is also referred to by some commentators as "Palestine's Mandela".

Barghouthi was captured by Israel armed forces in 2002 in Ramallah. Israeli authorities accused him of murder of Israeli civilians and attacks on Israeli soldiers, and after a controversial trial he was sentenced to five life sentences in Israel. Barghouthi still exerts great influence in Fateh even after his imprisonment in Israel.

In negotiations between Hamas and Israel over the prisoners exchange for the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, Marwan Barghouthi is one of the prisoners on the Hamas’ list that Islamic movement demands to be released.
