Abdel Rizeq was born in Salfit in 1958. He undertook his secondary education at Salfit Secondary School and then traveled to the United States where he obtained a PhD in economics from the University of Iowa in May, 1986. He then became assistant professor in the department of economics at al-Najah University in Nablus. In 2001 and 2002 he was research coordinator in the Palestinian Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS) in Ramallah. He has been detained in Israeli prisons twice - once in 1997 for four months and again in December 2005 for three months. Abdel Rizeq has received several awards, including the Abdel Hamid Shouman Award for Arab Young Scholars in Social Sciences in 1991.
He is currently a researcher at the Palestine Economic Research Unit, MAS, and a professor of economics at al-Najah University in Nablus. He is a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) for the Reform and Change list.
