Mustafa Salam al-Bishtawi better known as Major General Nasser Yusef, a member of Fateh, was minister of interior and national security during the ninth Palestinian government between February 2005 and March 2006, having been minister of interior since the emergency government was formed in October 2003.

NasserYusefwasbornin1943inJiseralMajama,Bisan,intheJordanValley.HereceivedhisearlyeducationinShunaShamaliyaandcompletedhissecondaryeducationatHassanal-SabahSchoolinIrbidinJordan.
HejoinedtheFatehmovementin1964anditsmilitarywingin1965.AsaFatehrecruithetrainedataleadershipcourseforFatehmembersatNamkinMilitaryCollegeinChinafromJulytoDecember1967.HebecameFateh’scommanderofthecentralsectorinJordanfrom1968until1969,andthenbecameabrigadecommanderinLebanonfrom1969until1970intheal-Arqubearea,knownas“Fatehland”.HewasalsomadeageneralinthePalestinianLiberationArmy.
In1974hejoinedafieldstudymissioninVietnamonbehalfofthePalestineLiberationOrganization(PLO).InthesameyearhealsobecamecommanderoftheSeptemberMartyrs’BrigadeinLebanon.HewasmadecommanderoftheYarmoukforcesin1979andal-KaramehforcesinJordanin1986.
YusefbeganhispoliticalcareerwhenhewaselectedtotheFatehcentralcommitteeinAugust1989.In1990hestudiedIslamiceconomicsatYarmoukUniversityinJordan.HereturnedtoGazain1994aftertheestablishmentofthePalestinianAuthority(PA)andbecameheadofthepublicsecurityforcesbasedatLasariainGazaCity.From1995hewasresponsibleforjointIsraeli-PalestinianpatrolsinGaza,andheoversawtheIsraelimilitary’swithdrawalfromJenininNovember1996.
InApril2003hewasslatedbyMahmoudAbbasforthenewpostofministerforadministrativereforminthenewcabinet.However,duetoYasserArafat’sopposition,hewasremovedfromtheline-upannouncedlaterthatmonth.
