City of Jericho

Jericho is a green oasis in the Jordan Valley lying between the River Jordan, the Dead Sea and Jerusalem. It lies 250 meters below sea level and is thus considered to be the "lowest" city in the world. To the Canaanites it meant "the moon". In Syriac the name meant "scent and odor."

Jericho is the oldest city in the world. The ruins of the oldest civilization discovered in Jericho are 10,000 years old. There are many important and beautiful historical places to visit there such as Old Jericho dating from 8000BC, a bedrock of more than 23 layers of ancient civilization built on a hill. It has the oldest known stairs in the world, the oldest wall and a massive defense tower dating before 7000BC. Those findings make Jericho the first fortified city in History. Other places are River Jordan where Jesus Christ was baptized; Mount of Temptation (the 1 and 3 temptations of Christ where he fasted refusing to turn stones into bread); the Ummayad Hisham Palace (aesthetic Arab art and architecture); Ein al-Sultan (Elisha) Spring; the Sycamore Tree (known as Zakka's tree about 2000 years old when Jesus passed through Jericho); Monastery of St. George in Wadi al-Qilt (great for hiking too); the Hasmoneans (Herod) Palace (winter resort for the Second Temple rulers); Monastery of Deir Hijlah (St. Jerasimos providing picnic/hostel facility); the Qumran Caves (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found) and last but not least the fascinating Dead Sea, the "lowest" place on earth whose water has high salt content helpful for treating skin disease. It's the site for the traditional story of Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah-the oldest known gay community.

The great winter climate of the city (Jerusalem could be cold and rainy but 30km away short sleeves are worn in Jericho). Palestinians traditionally either have winter homes in Jericho (those well-off) or visit it on the weekend to indulge in the sun, the abundant seasonal citrus fruits (as well as banana and dates), the Dead Sea, or just taking walks or bike rides in the peaceful quiet flat city where biking is a famous sport and part of every day life. Those who come never leave without a bite at one of this ancient city's restaurants. There are various facilities that have been built for the domestic and international visitors. In addition to the Ein al-Sultan cable car to Mount of Temptation (nice restaurant and great view of Jericho, Dead Sea and Jerusalem's Mt. of Olives' towers) and the Jericho Resort Village (nice hotel with bungalows and swimming pools).
