Al-Aloul was born in Nablus in 1950 and holds a BA in geography from the American University of Beirut. He joined Fateh in 1967 and has been arrested several times since by Israeli troops. He was imprisoned for three years and then deported to Jordan.
He moved to Lebanon and became a member of the supreme military council in the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1975. He was head of the Freedom Activities Office around the world, as well as being secretary general of the occupied territory committee. During the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, al-Aloul was war commander of the Sannine region of Lebanon.
In 1995 he was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) to represent Nablus. He was also a member of the Fateh Revolutionary Council. He was one of the leading assistants to Khalil al-Wazir, ‘Abu Jihad’, who was assassinated by Israel in 1988. Two of his sons were killed during al-Aqsa Intifada.
