MESHAAL: HAMAS REJECTS ANY ‘ALTERNATIVE HOMELAND’ PROJECTS; JORDANIAN MONARCH REAFFIRMS IMPORTANCE OF PROMOTING UNITY OF PALESTINIAN PEOPLE
During his meeting with Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshaal, King Abdallah II of Jordan reaffirmed his country’s support for the right of the Palestinians to establish their independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders with east Jerusalem as the capital through negotiations. He said Jordan would continue efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians. On his part, Meshaal stressed on the deep-rooted relations between the Palestinians and Jordan saying, “we are in the service of Jordan in all issues”. The meeting was aimed at continuing coordination and discussions between both sides. Meshaal reaffirmed the Palestinians’ rejection of any projects to create an alternative homeland. Meshaal’s right hand man, Mousa Abu Marzouq also told the Jordanian-based Al Ghad newspaper that the Hamas delegation would brief Jordanian officials on the reconciliation efforts, adding that the two sides would discuss the ramifications of Hamas’ presence in Jordan and developing relationship between them. This is the second official visit by Meshaal to Jordan during which he is also scheduled to meet with prime minister Fayez Tarawneh and head of the intelligence services Faisal Shobaki. Observers also say Meshaal and his delegation will most likely participate in the funeral of Hamas leader Kamal Ghanajeh in Amman who was assassinated yesterday in Damascus. Ghanajeh is a Jordanian national (Al Quds)
So far, details of the assassination were kept under wraps especially since it came in tandem with the visit to Jordan in order to avoid any sensitivities with Jordan in this regard. According to Al Quds Al Arabi, arrangements are now being made to receive the body in Amman even though it is still unknown whether Jordanian authorities have given their approval to hold the funeral on Jordanian territory located at the closest possible point to Palestine. According to the sources, Meshaal made a personal request to Jordanian authorities to be allowed to hold a huge funeral for Ghanajeh. They also said the movement had opened an investigation into the assassination, which is believed to have been carried out by the Israeli Mossad, saying they want to know how the killers were able to reach Ghanajeh who works and lives in Damascus with the complete knowledge of Syrian authorities. HAMAS INVESTIGATES GHANAJEH’S ASSISSINATION
Ghanajeh was found him his home in the Qudsiyeh neighborhood of Damascus showing signs of torture. It was burned and stashed in a closet.  Local Syrian coordination committees have accused Syrian security authorities of the assassination, saying the aim was to cause dissent between the Palestinians and Syrians. Member of the coordination committee in the Yarmuk refugee camp Mohammed Hifawi said the method in which Ghanjeh was assassinated had all the signs of the Syrian regime. Still, Hamas sources have stated on the Hizballah website that this would not have been the first time the Mossad targeted Ghanajeh, the second man after assassinated Hamas leader Mahmoud Al Mabhuh, saying he remained in Damascus because he was the direct link in charge of arms sales from Iran, Syria and Lebanon to Palestine. The source said the Mossad tried to assassinate Ghanajeh twice before in Damascus and Beirut. Israel so far has remained vague as to its involvement, with defense minister Ehud Barak saying it was not “necessarily true” that Israel had anything to do with the killing, but adding that Ghanajeh was “not a good guy.” (Al Ayyam) However, Hamas officials are still wary of pointing the finger at any party in particular, saying the investigation is still ongoing, with Hamas leader Izzat Rishiq saying on his Facebook page that it is still too early to name names. NETANYAHU OFFERS THE RELEASE OF 25 PRISONERS IN STAGES ON CONDITION OF MEETINGS WITH ABBAS
According to Saeb Erkat, PLO executive committee member confirmed the meeting between President Abbas and Israeli deputy prime minister and head of Kadima Shaul Mofaz in Ramallah on Sunday. Observers say if Mofaz carries positive responses to Abbas’ request to release 132 prisoners in jail before 1994 and to allow the entry of equipment for the security services through Jordan, this would open the way for a meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu. Palestinian sources say however that Netanyahu still rejects the release of all the prisoners but will offer to release 25 of them in stages on condition that their release is carried out after meetings with Abbas and not before. The United States is one party waiting for the outcome of the Sunday meeting, after proposing to Israel to make a series of confidence-building steps as a way of returning to negotiations; the Palestinians are insisting they return to negotiations only after settlements end and Israel accepts the 1967 borders as a basis for the two state solution. Erekat said recently said if Israel refuses to abide by its obligations, the PLO would go to the UN for statehood (Al Ayyam)

THE ISRAELI ARMY TO ASK FOR BUDGET TO RETURN TO EGYPTIAN BORDERS; FEARS OPERATIONS FROM SYRIA
The Hebrew language newspaper Maariv said yesterday that the Israeli army asked for a new budget of ILS15 billion over the next five years in order for the army to regain its strength at the Egyptian border after the victory of the Muslim Brotherhood. According to the paper, the army carried out a recent study in light of the revolution in Egypt, saying the army has to regain its power at the border before it’s too late. Senior military officers said the Itam unit which was formed three months ago to maintain security long the border has not had any rest around the clock, adding that its strength will multiply when the security fence is completed along the border. FOREIGN MINISTRY: FATE OF BETHLEHEM TO BE DETERMINED TODAY
Dr. Omar Awadallah, head of the UN department and organizations in the foreign affairs ministry said the date for voting on Bethlehem to be put on the list of world heritage sites would probably be taken today instead of tomorrow in Saint Petersburg. The voting is to take place today at noon. Awadallah said a team from the foreign ministry under Riyad Al Malki was working hard to convince the 21 members of the committee to vote in favor of Bethlehem, saying many countries had pledged to vote positively despite the war being waged by the US and Israel against the vote. Bethlehem needs two-thirds of the votes in order to be added to the list, with Awadallah saying the Palestinians had secured 11 so far. (http://maannews.net/arb/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=499672)

PALESTINIAN YOUTHS SUBMIT ARREST WARRANT FOR MOFAZ UPON HIS ENTRY TO RAMALLAH
A group of Palestinian youths submitted an arrest warrant to the Palestinian attorney general asking him to arrest Israeli deputy prime minister Shaul Mofaz the moment he enters Ramallah to meet with President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday. The initiative was created by a group of youths calling themselves “Youth who love their country”. Head of the group Ali Ubeidat told the press that they ordered the arrest warrant because Mofaz has been responsible for crimes against our people in Gaza and the West Bank; he is the one who led the siege on late president Yasser Arafat and caused his death. That is why he should be arrested and not welcomed.” Ubeidat also said it was “a shame on our leadership for welcoming killers.” He also said that while there was nothing in Palestinian law that allowed for the trial of Israelis, this only meant they would call for a change in the law so that people like Mofaz could be tried. RIGHTS GROUP CALLS FOR RELEASE OF POLITICAL PRISONERS ON HUNGER STRIKE IN PA PRISONS
The Palestinian Center for Human Rights called yesterday for the release of six Hamas prisoners in PA jails who have been on hunger strike for several days. The center expressed its ‘deep concern’ for the lives of the six prisoners calling for a decision for their release. Othman Qawasmi, Mohammed Abu Hadid, Mutassim Natsheh and Mohammed Al Atrash, all from the Hebron district, are being held in the Bethlehem prison and have been on hunger strike since June 20. Last Friday, two other political prisoners joined the strike: Anas Abu Markhiyeh from Hebron, who has been in prison since December 19, 2011 and Islam Arouri who has been in a preventive security prison since October 2010 and is sentenced to three years in jail. HAMAS INTERIOR MINISTRY PUBLISHES CONFESSIONS OF COLLABORATORS WITH ISRAEL WHO HELPED ASSASSINATE LEADERS AND ACTIVISTS
The Hamas interior ministry published last night the confessions of a number of people accused of collaborating with Israel, saying these people helped to kill a number of senior leaders in Hamas. The confessions, which were broadcast in a 20 minute recorded video on ministry’s website, showed the confessions of the collaborators without naming names, highlighting their relationship with the Israeli security services and transferring information to Israeli officers which helped in the assassination of Hamas and Fatah officials including Abdel Aziz Rantisi, Ismail Abu Shanab, Salah Shehadah and Masoud Ayyad and Jihad Amarein from Fatah. The ministry’s statement said that the security coordination with Israel was a way to trap PA officers into working with the occupation, saying one unnamed PA officer who worked in the former PA interior ministry gave his confessions about his connections with Israeli intelligence services during his trips through the Erez crossing to his office in Jerusalem without providing further details. The interior ministry said the video only showed a small number of the names of collaborators they knew about saying it was a message to the enemy that all of their methods and been uncovered. ETZION PRISONERS GO ON HUNGER STRIKE; SOLIDARITY SIT IN IN QALQILYA
25 prisoners in the Gush Etzion settlement detention center west of Bethlehem went on hunger strike yesterday in protest of their living conditions by returning their meals. The prisoners say they have been refused transfer to other prisons due to overcrowding. They said the food is insufficient and are only allowed 1.5 hours a day for exercise, adding that they are being mistreated and put into solidarity confinement and beaten for any given reason. In related news, freed prisoner Tareq Abdel Aziz, head of Voice of the Prisoners radio said the Nafha prison authorities vacated two days ago Block 4 of the prison and distributed the prisoners to the Eshel, Ramon and Megiddo prisons in order to shake up the instability of the prisoners and their families. In Qaqlilya, a sit in was held in solidarity with the prisoners especially Samer Al Barq who has been on hunger strike for a month (Al Quds)

ISRAELI OFFICIAL INCITES FOR NOT GRANTING MEDICAL INSURANCE TO PALESTINIANS
Deputy Israeli health minister Yacov Leitzman expressed his strong opposition to Israeli insurance companies insuring Palestinians in the country. Leitzman said in press statements yesterday that: by this, Palestinians will be able to receive medical treatment in Israeli hospitals, which will come at the expense of Israelis”. Israeli paper claims settlers bought most of the Palestinian private land the Migron settlement outpost is built on at the last minute
According to an Israeli newspaper yesterday, the settlers at the Migron outpost bought at the last minute most of the land on which they are living from Palestinian owners in a bid to prevent the evacuation of the outpost. Representatives from the outpost say the bought more than 80% of the land from Palestinians who said it was their privately owned pieces. According to a source involved in the deal, the land sales were ‘completely legal’. And while the people of Migron refuse to offer details into how the sale went down, the source said there was more than one owner, adding that the funder of the deal is and American-Jewish Zionist who paid a few hundred thousand dollars for the land. The leaders of the deal are hoping this will prevent the evacuation of the settlement given that the majority of the land is now owned by Jews with only four of the 70 homes still on privately-owned Palestinian land. Israeli groups: Facilitations introduced at Qalandiya checkpoint
Jerusalem residents say they have noticed tangible facilitations at the Qalandiya checkpoint north of the city both for pedestrians and motorists. According to the people, car trunks are not searched routinely and people other than first degree relatives are now allowed to stay in the car while passing the checkpoint. Also those under 14 and over 45 are allowed to stay in the bus without having to get down and walk through the pedestrian checkpoint, saying the wait to cross by foot is also shorter. According to Ir Amim for citizens’ rights, while the group was somewhat relieved by the changes, it is still wary that they will be temporary. The association also said the changes were part of a campaign and letters sent to the government by two Israeli organizations calling on the authorities to ensure that human rights are not violated at the checkpoint and that a solution is found to the traffic and long waits there. The letters also called on authorities to give clear instructions to Israeli soldiers and border police to deal with the people with respect and dignity. (Al Ayyam)

Maariv: disputes among Palestinians, Israelis over Mt. Jerzim as a heritage and tourist site
The Hebrew language newspaper Maariv said this morning that there were Palestinian-Israeli disputes over the Mt. Jerzim site as a tourist and heritage site, saying Israel wanted to proclaim it as an Israeli site while the Palestinian Authority insists it is Palestinian. According to the sources, Israel criticized the PA, which demanded that the site be registered as Palestinian at UNESCO in an emergency meeting to discuss the issue. Israeli sources claim the site has Jewish, Christian and Samaritan importance and history and has nothing to do with the PA.. The PA is  planning to submit projects for about 20 heritage sites threatened by Israel, saying they needed to be expedited because of the Israeli threat against them, including Mt. Jerzim

Israeli settlement expansion is continuing
By Nazih Al Qasus

There is never a day when news agencies do not publish news of new settlement projects or attacks on the Aqsa Mosque compound or on other mosques in the occupied Palestinian territories. This is all happening under the noses of the United Nations, the Security Council and international human rights organizations. In spite of all this, we do not hear one statement condemning Israel’s measures as if this rogue state is above all international law and has the right to carry out its settlement expansion on this occupied land, one of the few remaining pieces of land in the world still under occupation.

The most recent news is that the Israeli army ministry, the finance ministry and the Israel land authorities department have signed an agreement by which some Israeli camps will be evacuated in order to build 25,000 settlement units instead. Israeli sources have hailed the agreement as historical.

Furthermore, there is an Israeli plan to take over the Mt. of Olives facing the Aqsa Mosque on claims that there is an old Israeli cemetery there. The plan has already been put into action by planting virtual Jewish graves in preparation for the complete takeover of the mountain.

The Israeli violations in the occupied Palestinian territories are ongoing and have not stopped for one day. Most recently, a group of Israeli naval officers, Jewish extremists and two Israeli Knesset members broke into the Aqsa Mosque on Monday, walking around its grounds under the protection of the Israeli army.
The break-ins into the Aqsa by Israeli groups has become an almost daily happening, which is proof that the enemy is continuing with its plans aimed at demolishing the mosque and building the alleged  temple in its place. The plans are securely in place to build this temple over the ruins of the destroyed mosque.

These repeated attacks on the Aqsa Mosque come in tandem with vast measures being taken in East Jerusalem by Israeli occupation authorities. The demolition of Arab homes is being carried out, they are evicted or their Jerusalem ID cards are revoked; Torah gardens are being built and entire neighborhoods are being wiped out in order to change the topographic nature of the city in preparation for its judiazation. Waqf buildings  are being destroyed and Omayyad places adjacent to the Aqsa Mosque are being torn down where apartment buildings for Israelis will take their place.

This is in the West Bank. As for Gaza, Israeli air raids are almost constant and they do not distinguish between children, the elderly or women. The raids and the frequent victims have become more like a ritual for the people of Gaza, who have been under siege for the past five years while the world looks on. Even the European Union, which always claims to be the protector of human rights, has not even made one strong statement condemning the siege.

There is no people in the world who suffer like the Palestinian people. They have been under the yoke of occupation since 1967 and must bear the measures this occupation metes out on them. Their lives have become like a living hell with close to 10,000 prisoners in Israeli jails including hundreds of women and children. Recognition battle over Jesus' birthplace
By Nada Atrash

Bethlehem, occupied Palestinian territories - For millions of Christians around the world, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is a place for worship and contemplation, a revered site worth travelling thousands of kilometres for a chance to kneel before the birthplace of Jesus Christ. A tiny door welcomes visitors to the church, forcing them to humbly bow before making their way inside. Mosaics and glass lamps adorn the dimly lit church and a narrow stairway leads visitors to the grotto where Jesus is believed to have been born.

Little do those pilgrims know that the church is about to become the centre of contention in St Petersburg, Russia, where Palestinians are hoping that a "Hail Mary vote" due on Friday, June 29 will mark the inclusion of Jesus' birthplace on the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) World Heritage List.

Churches, monasteries and convents from Armenia to Uruguay are a part of the world-renowned list by UNESCO, which protects natural and cultural heritage that meet its criteria for "universal value to humanity".

In its meeting that concludes on July 6, the UN body's World Heritage Committee, comprising 21 member states, will consider whether to add the Church of the Nativity to its list.

Controversial vote

Palestinians feel that it is only natural that Jesus' birthplace be part of this list. "There are [more than] 900 locations at the World Heritage List - why not Palestine?" said Bethlehem's deputy mayor, George Saadeh. "What is more important than the Church of the Nativity and City of Bethlehem?"

In addition to churches and holy places, World Heritage Sites include the Pyramids in Egypt, the Grand Canyon in the United States and France's Notre Dame Cathedral.

Bethlehem's Church of Nativity, the Greek Orthodox Convent, the Church of St Catherine, the Latin and Armenian Convents and the surrounding route taken by pilgrims have all been nominated for inclusion on the list.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) filed to have these sites included in February 2011. Meanwhile, the PA applied to join UNESCO, and was admitted as a member nine months later. This caused the US and Israel to cut off their funding to UNESCO, causing the organisation to lose more than a quarter of its annual revenue.

Both countries viewed Palestine's membership bid as a unilateral attempt to gain statehood recognition in light of a moribund peace process. The upcoming vote on the Church of the Nativity is expected to be just as controversial, and many committee member abstentions are expected.

The PA has an amendable list of other sites that it will slowly add to the Heritage List, including the village of Battir and the old cities of Jerusalem and Hebron.

Little ghost town of Bethlehem

Bethlehem is a top destination for tourists and pilgrims visiting the Holy Land and is a major income generator for Palestinians. Tourism to this revered city has been hit hard in the past few years because of stringent Israeli military restrictions on movement, mushrooming illegal settlements, and the separation wall that has cut the city off from neighbouring Jerusalem.

Not only does Israel control the border points with Jordan and Egypt (the only exit and entry points to the Palestinian Territories), but it also controls movement between the West Bank and Jerusalem. Tourists and Palestinian guides alike are subject to this system and, accordingly, Israel dictates how foreign dollars are spent.

In effect, Bethlehem draws travellers who come here on short day visits, and go back to their Jerusalem hotels in the evening, depriving Palestinian hotels and establishments from reaping the full benefits of visiting groups.

In addition to the Israeli military chokehold on the city, there are 22 settlements on the land surrounding Bethlehem, four of which disconnect the city from Jerusalem, according to the PLO Negotiations Support Unit. Once complete, an additional settlement, Givat Yael, will complete the ring of settlements that encircle Jerusalem, virtually cutting it off from the rest of the West Bank.

The effects of the occupation on this holy city are glaring: closed shops dot the pilgrimage route along Star Street - believed to be the path taken by Mary and Joseph - with hardly any tourists in sight.

Deputy Mayor Saadeh said he thinks that gaining World Heritage status would not only protect and preserve the city, but also help market it as a destination worth visiting for much longer than a day. This would bring economic benefits to the city and attract much-needed funds for restoration and preservation.

"Bethlehem is the capital city of the Christian world. It is a place of great historical, religious and cultural importance," he said. "We want to protect and preserve [it]. This is very important for the Palestinian people, for us as Christians and for the world."

Restoring the church

The last restoration made on church property was in the 1950s, and conservation methods acknowledged by the World Heritage Committee were not used.

"The roof of the church is leaking and causing deterioration to the icons and mosaics on the walls," said Nada Atrash, an architect at Bethlehem's Centre for Cultural Heritage Preservation.

"The main entrance is damaged and has had to be supported by wood panels since the mid-19th century. Bethlehem is deteriorating and we need immediate intervention," she said.

In addition to renovation and restoration issues, the church suffered extensive damage when Israeli troops and tanks besieged it for more than a month in 2002.

Israel has opposed the Palestinians' attempt to list the church's location as "Palestine", saying that the attempt to have it listed is "a unilateral act" that could only be taken once final status negotiations have resumed. But the Palestinians argue that, as a member of UNESCO, they have the right to protect their heritage.

Officials have made it clear that this move also comes under the umbrella of self-determination, and they are moving ahead with their bid, despite a committee of UNESCO experts saying that the move should be delayed by at least a year on the grounds that the church is not in any imminent danger.

But in an open letter to UNESCO's world heritage committee, 15 Bethlehem organisations said the "international community has a legal and moral responsibility to protect our sites [after] 45 years of illegal Israeli occupation".

They urged the 21 party states due to vote on Friday, including France, Germany and India, to "lend Bethlehem your voice and vote in favour of [its] inclusion as a World Heritage Site. The time for our long overdue admission is now." (http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2012/06/2012628125823852846.html)

Opinions

The Palestinians should not become victims of the Arab Spring
Al Quds Editorial
The Palestinian cause was not the direct reason for the uprisings that took place over the past year and are still continuing, even if it was dormant under the ashes of the dictatorial Arab regimes burnt by the flames of Arab revolutions. The Tunisians and also the people in Egypt, in Libya, Yemen, Bahrain and Syria all wanted to put an end to the dictatorial regime that had suppressed their freedoms in order to start over again under democracy and economic and social flourishing.

And while there were many things in common between them, the Palestinian cause has always remained in the minds of the Arabs as they protested their regimes’ subordination to foreign wills and their bending even to Israeli dictates.

The siege on Gaza, for example, was a source of anger, not just in Egypt but in the entire Arab world. Husni Mubarak’s regime played an active role in this siege and dealt with this siege and with the Palestinian cause and  the so-called peace process from a point of detached neutrality instead of from a standpoint of partnership with the Palestinians, who paid a heavy price in people and in money during the Arab wars with Israel.

It can be assumed that the Arab countries which are still in the transitional stage from the era of dictatorship to one of democracy and freedom have not yet reached the stage of stability in their country’s rule of government. Some are even suffering from a kind of counter revolution with disputes between the religious and liberal trends. Hence, they are busy with internal issues and cannot yet turn to those outside of their own concerns, even if they have to do with their national external security and with the Arab’s most central cause, or at least what should be the central cause.

In some of these countries, some poisonous vibes have been coming out about Palestine and the Palestinians aimed at spreading hatred and spite against our people using a variety of falsehoods and lies. The goal is clear, which is to appease the United States and Israel; they are offering these two free advertisement services or perhaps they are paid, but which are being shunned by the majority of Arab peoples.

It is unfortunate that this Arab isolation of the Palestinian cause, which we hope is temporary, comes at a time that is so decisive for this cause. And this can only serve Israeli plans, especially in regards to settlements and land confiscation, forcefully taking over homes in Jerusalem and expediting the judaization of Palestinian land.

Even with the Palestinian realization that this Arab preoccupation elsewhere will not last long, some interest in the Palestinians and Palestine through real and effective Arab initiatives and stances that would show Israel that the Arab and Islamic world is behind the cause, would help to alleviate some of the intensity of Israel’s measures against our people. It would also show Israel that continuing their practices will have grave consequences sooner or later after the Arab revolutionary regimes settle in and achieve at least the minimum ceiling of their own local goals.
