RAMALLAH Feb 23 (JMCC) - Europe must do more than call attention to the contours of a final settlement between Palestinians and Israelis, the French and Spanish foreign ministers said in an op-ed published Tuesday in Le Monde.
Europe must offer assurances that the process Europe wishes to set in motion is irreversible, wrote Bernard Kouchner and Miguel Moratinos. This means assuring Israel that their security and the Jewish nature of the state will be guaranteed and promising Palestinians the right to live in a viable, democratic, and independent state.
The opinion peace proposed a tight negotiating timetable on final status issues, the hosting of a peace summit and then Europe's recognition of a Palestinian state.
