Located on the Egyptian-Israeli border, the supervision of this crossing, called Kerem Shalom in Hebrew, is coordinated between Israeli and Egyptian authorities. The crossing is designated for cargo movement on both sides and occasionally for the entry of emergency aid into Gaza Strip.
Recently, this crossing has been used for the passage of Palestinians entering Gaza, especially in cases when they have been stranded at Rafah crossing for extended periods.
