RAMALLAH, June 8 (JMCC) - Political sources in occupied East Jerusalem have disclosed that Palestinian - Israeli negotiations are once again under way under the aegis of the US administration, reports qudsnet.com. The talks are being kept away from the media spotlight, with no official statements from Palestinian, Israeli or American representatives. The venue remains unknown.
Nonetheless it is understood that, backed by US Mideast envoy George Mitchell, senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat is the sole Palestinian figure involved.
It is hoped these shadow negotiations will serve to revitalize the official ongoing proximity talks. The talks have so far struggled to take off. They have been marred at every step by developments on the ground; first the Israeli government’s March announcement to continue settlement construction in Ramat Shlomo, and more recently, Israel’s interception of a Gaza-bound Turkish aid ship in which nine activists were killed.
Sources told the website that these side talks are necessary given the particularly tense relationship between President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Netanyahu. They also come ahead of Abbas’ visit to the White House on June 9 to discuss the progress of the proximity talks.
