RAMALLAH, April 9, 2019 - A broad majority of Palestinians support the holding of legislative and presidential elections, despite that nearly half worry that they will not be free and fair, finds a new Jerusalem Media & Communications Center poll.

The mid-March survey comes as the Palestinian government led by Mahmoud Abbas has dissolved the Palestinian legislature, which was crippled by Israeli arrests and in-fighting after the opposition group Hamas took a majority of its seats in 2016.

Eighty-three percent of Palestinians polled wanted to see elections for the Legislative Council, and 87% approved of holding presidential elections, found the poll.

Reflecting lingering fears about the success of any elections, 45% of the respondents thought that a vote would be unfair. A slightly greater proportion of respondents in Gaza had faith in the elections process, compared with those in the West Bank.

More poll results can be viewed on the JMCC website, in both Arabic and English.
