Israeli officials told the press on April 22 that use of white phosphorus in Gaza was halted after its disclosure by media and human rights organizations. Still, the London Times reports, a military official claimed the white smoke charges were only used in accordance with international law.
“Since this was a big buzz in the media, we issued an order 7 Jan '09 to stop
using white phosphorus shells,” he said, adding: “These shells were used only to
create smokescreens, in keeping with international law.”
